ARTIST BIO
Gisele's most recent paintings have been described as using calming color, fluid and organic shapes but also utilizing a contrast of paint techniques that create a beautiful tension. Currently residing in Long Beach, CA with her husband, 2 step children and dog Lux, she has made a space for a studio at home that's also just a quick drive to the beach. Spending summers on a lake in Maine, a farm in New England, retreats in Montana and local deserts, the need for connection to nature is imprinted on her mind and spirit. Living in the LA area with 9 million people, the coast has been her respite and muse. She received a BFA from CSULB in 1989 and six years later received a MFA in Drawing & Painting from CSUF. Works have shown in local area galleries and museum as well as WA, MT and NH, reviews of her work in Long Beach Press Telegram and Grunion Gazette.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Biophilia- our genetic programming for the love of nature, not just for food and shelter, but peace of mind, is one level of narrative found in my work. Working from three dimensional objects, two dimensional photos and memory from time spent in nature, contributes to the complexity of imagery. The work starts in a more intuitive manner, a struggle emerges, and a surprise appears, resulting in a complex experience for both myself and the viewer. Working with multiple techniques, real and abstract form, add to the complexity and keeps the image active and the viewer involved. Layering technique and narrative, I hope to create a new environment in which the viewer may lose themselves as I do while creating.
